The alarm

June 18th, 2008 by nicks in Uncategorized · No Comments

fire-engine.jpgThe man that set the fire alarm off  was doing some soldering. Last time he did the soldering it set off the fire alarm. This time he covered the smoke detector with a rubber glove to stop it happening. Unfortunately the powder inside the glove set off the alarm again! We were all evacuated and had to wait outside until it was safe to go back in again.

H will have to be carefiul when he does soldering again.

Antigone

February 13th, 2008 by nicks in Uncategorized · No Comments

Last term we went to see a Greek play performed by the college drama students.

It was called “Antigone”.  I really enjoyed the play and thought the acting was really good.

Here is what I have found out about the play on the Internet

It was written by Sophocles in 442 BC. This means 442 years before christ was born, so it was written 2450 years ago!

The characters are

Antigone: Daughter of Oedipus, niece of Creon, fiance of Haemon,, sister of

     Etercles and Polynices.

Ismene: Sister of Antigone

Creon: Ruler of Thebes.  Antigone, Eteocles, Polynices, and Ismene’s uncle.  Father of

Haemon.

Haemon: Creon’s sun, bethrothed to Antigone.

Teiresias: A seer or prophet, blind.

Eurydice: Creon’s wife Haemon’s mother.

The play takes place in Thebes. Oedipus’s two sons kill each other. Creon issues an order that no one is to bury Polynices upon pain of death. But Antigone is determined that her brother’s body will have the proper rites of burial. Antigone defies the order. She is caught, and sentenced by Creon to be buried alive - even though she is betrothed to his son Haemon. After the blind prophet Tiresias proves that the gods are on Antigone’s side, Creon changes his mind - but too late. He goes first to bury Polynices, but Antigone has already hanged herself. When Creon arrives at the tomb, Haemon attacks him and then kills himself. When the news of their death is reported, Creon’s wife Eurydice takes her own life. Creon is alone.
